Shower speakers have finally come of age.
The best shower speaker from a few years ago can’t compare to today’s offerings from the likes of JBL, Anker, and Ultimate Ears.
Traditionally, the best you could hope for from most shower speakers was that they wouldn’t stop working the minute they got damp, let alone wet. And that you could hear the tinny sound above the noise of the shower.
Now you can sing along lustily to your favorite Slipknot track without leaving the shower.
That’s progress!

What to look for when buying a shower speaker
Just like choosing any other speaker, there’s a number of things to consider when buying a speaker for the shower. And a couple that are unique to shower speakers.
- Do you want to use it elsewhere? Is it going to be a dedicated shower speaker or do you want to use it in another room in the house? Maybe even outdoors? In which case you may want a more rugged speaker capable of kicking out enough sound for an impromptu party in the park. You’ll also want to consider the next entry.
- How portable is it? Do you intend to carry it around? In which case, size and weight matter.
- What’s the audio quality like? Just because you’re in the shower doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice audio quality anymore. Manufacturers like JBL and Ultimate Ears make superb speakers that can be used in the shower.
- Is it loud enough? Some showers can be pretty loud on full blast, in which case you may need something with a bit more volume.
- What connectivity does it have? Bluetooth, Wireless, or both? Does it have an auxiliary line-in? Probably not much use in the shower, but if you intend to use it elsewhere, it might come in handy.
- Is it compatible with Alexa or Google Assistant? Maybe you want to check the weather and your bank account while in the shower?
- Do you want to make calls? Perhaps you want to get a headstart on the day’s business, in which case you’ll need a model with a hands-free speakerphone. Obviously, if it’s a high-pressure business deal, it might be better to wait until you’ve finished your ablutions!
- How often do I have to re-charge it? Bluetooth is a wonderful thing but it munches through battery life like a shark at a tuna convention. If you’re like me and find recharging all your devices a right pain in the rear, then you’ll want to go for a speaker with some serious battery longevity.
- How much is it? If you’re going to be using your shower speaker for multiple uses, then you can afford to splash out on something more expensive.
- How waterproof is it? Not all shower speakers are made equal. Just because it says ‘shower speaker’ in the ad, doesn’t mean you can strap it to the showerhead and leave it there. I’ll explain waterproof ratings in a minute.
- And lastly, does it have a suction cup? Sometimes you just want to stick it to the shower wall and forget about it.
Waterproof ratings explained
What’s the best waterproof speaker for the shower? I mean, shower speakers are waterproof speakers, aren’t they? This may sound like a silly question but really it isn’t. A manufacturer can call a speaker a ‘shower speaker’ or mention that you can use it while taking a shower, but it doesn’t automatically mean it’s in any way waterproof.
To try and clarify just how waterproof a speaker or any other product is, some bright – or watery – spark came up with IP ratings, ‘IP’ stands for ‘Ingress Protection’. It doesn’t just cover water ingress either, it covers:
- Resistance to ingress from foreign bodies (dust, dirt, etc).
- Resistance to moisture ingress -the one we’re most interested in.
So a speaker could have a single figure rating – IPX5 for instance – which means it’s resistant to moisture to some degree, but not dust, sand, mud, or peanut butter and jam which are all foreign bodies that have no place inside your speaker. If it had an IP65 rating, then it would be resistant to moisture and all those other things (the ‘foreign body’ rating goes up to 6).
As you, as the user of the speaker, are also amusingly classified as a ‘foreign body’, this figure also covers ‘resistance to ingress, accidental or otherwise, by the user’. Now, if you’re observant, you’ll have noticed that when the speaker has no rating for ‘foreign body’ ingress, an X is used to show that it hasn’t been tested, hence IPX5. The rating we’ll concentrate on is the waterproof rating. It goes from 0 to 9.
RATING | MEANING | COMMENTS |
IP0 | Not rated. | This doesn’t necessarily mean the speaker isn’t waterproof, just that it has never been tested. |
IP1 | Protection against vertically falling droplets, such as condensation, sufficient that no damage or interrupted functioning of components will be incurred when an item is upright. | Obviously no use for a shower speaker. |
IP2 | Protection against vertically dripping water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15° off vertical. | No use for a shower speaker unless you can keep it well away from the shower itself. |
IP3 | Protection against direct moisture spray at angles up to 60° off vertical. | Still no use as a shower speaker. |
IP4 | Protection against splashing water from any direction tested for a minimum of 10 minutes with an oscillating spray (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects). | May sound okay, but not quite good enough for a shower speaker. |
IP5 | Protection against low-pressure jets (6.3 mm) of directed water from any angle (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects). | This is probably the minimum to go for. You’ll still need to keep it away from the shower itself, but it should be okay if it gets the occasional splash. |
IP6 | Protection against powerful jets (12.5 mm nozzle) of directed water from any direction. | Now, this is bonafide shower speaker territory. If you are going to be using it in the shower a lot, I’d still recommend going for IP7 or IP8. |
IP7 | Protection against full immersion for up to 30 minutes at depths between 15 cm and 1 meter (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects). | This ticks all the boxes for a shower speaker. |
IP8 | Protection against extended immersion under higher pressure (i.e. greater depths). Precise parameters of this test are set and advertised by the manufacturer. | The Gold Standard for shower speakers. |
IP9 | Protection against high-pressure, high-temperature jet sprays, wash-downs, or steam-cleaning procedures. | Mostly relates to vehicles. Unless you intend to clean your shower speaker with a high-pressure hose, probably not needed. |
Best sounding shower speaker overall: JBL Charge 4
What do I like about the JBL Charge 4?
- Rugged design.
- Sound quality.
- Connect+ ability.
What don’t I like about the JBL Charge 4?
- There’s no speakerphone.
- If you’re being picky, the sound for the money isn’t 360 degrees, it only comes out of one end.
- You’d need a big suction cup if you wanted to attach it to your bathroom wall!
What do you get alongside the JBL Charge 4 in the box?
- Type C USB cable.
- Quick Start guide.
- Warranty card.
- Safety sheet.
How waterproof is the JBL Charge 4?
The Charge 4 has an IPX7 rating, so in reality, it’s a JBL shower speaker, whether JBL acknowledges it or not. It’s perfect for use in the shower and in the pool as it also floats. I’m not sure for how long, so maybe grab it quick if it falls in.
How well is the JBL Charge 4 built and designed?
The Charge 4 is cylindrical and built to withstand the occasional knock. It’s certainly rugged enough to use outside of the shower and house. JBL has also gone to the trouble of producing it in a range of colors so one should suit your shower decor:
- Black
- Black camo
- Blue
- Camouflage
- Gray
- Pink
- Red
- Sand
- Teal
- White
- Yellow
At 3.50 x 8.50 x 3.40 inches, it’ll fit on a bathroom shelf and at 3.22 lbs it’s hardly going to break it. If you’re going to carry it around, it’s also not too bulky or heavy.
What does the JBL Charge 4 sound like?
Impressive is the word. Especially for its size. It kicks out 30 watts with a pumping bass (helped by dual passive radiators). The bass can overpower the mid and highs on occasion, but not so as you’d notice in the shower. Even at half-volume, you’d need a pretty big shower not to hear this beast, so its tendency to distort a little at high volumes probably won’t matter.
How long does the JBL Charge 4 battery last?
The Charge 4 uses a Lithium-ion Polymer 27Wh rechargeable battery that, according to JBL, gives up to 20 hours of music streaming. Naturally, this isn’t at full volume, but it’s unlikely unless you live in a palace, that you’ll need it. It’s just as well that the battery lasts so long, as it takes 4 hours to recharge fully.
How do I connect the JBL Charge 4?
The Charge 4 uses Bluetooth 4.2, so is compatible with most Bluetooth-enabled devices. You can connect two devices at once, but only one device can control the speaker at a time. A more useful function is its compatibility with the Connect+ app. This gives it the ability to pair with any speaker, from any manufacturer, that is also compatible with the app. The Charge 4 also has a 3.5mm AUX in, so you can bypass Bluetooth altogether.
Is the JBL Charge 4 the best shower speaker for me?
Which speaker has the best sound quality is always going to be a subjective choice. But if you want a powerful Bluetooth shower speaker that also doubles as a rugged, go-anywhere device with excellent sound quality and kicking bass, the JBL Charge 4 is hard to beat. Whether you use it in the shower or not, it’s probably the best Bluetooth speaker for the money.

Best budget shower speaker: Oontz Angle 3 (3rd Gen)
What do I like about the Oontz Angle 3 (3rd Gen)?
- Compact.
- Light.
- Amazing sound for the money.
What don’t I like about the Oontz Angle 3 (3rd Gen)?
- Only waterproof to IPX5.
What do you get alongside the Oontz Angle 3 (3rd Gen) in the box?
- Micro USB charging cable.
- 3.5mm AUX cable.
How waterproof is the Oontz Angle 3 (3rd Gen)?
Okay, this is a budget shower speaker that you can still use elsewhere. Its rating of IPX5 means you’ll have to find a spot in your shower room that only gets the occasional splash.
How well is the Oontz Angle 3 (3rd Gen) built and designed?
Its angular design fits nicely in the hand and also sits on a bathroom shelf a treat. It might not like being dropped onto a tiled floor, but it’s well made. Disappointingly, it comes in black only. At 5.3 x 2.8 x 2.6 inches it’s as easy to pop onto a shelf as to pop into a rucksack, especially as it only weighs 9ozs.
What does the Oontz Angle 3 (3rd Gen) sound like?
Despite being a budget shower speaker, with two stereo drivers and a passive bass radiator, it produces a surprising amount of volume for only 10 watts. Certainly enough for an average shower room.
How long does the Oontz Angle 3 (3rd Gen) battery last?
The Angle 3’s 2500mAh rechargeable battery returns a reasonable 14 hours playback if you resist the urge to turn it up to the max.
How do I connect the Oontz Angle 3 (3rd Gen)?
The Angle 3 uses Bluetooth 4.2 so should connect to most devices. Surprisingly for the money, it also has a 3.5mm AUX in and a built-in microphone.
Is the Oontz Angle 3 (3rd Gen) the best shower speaker for me?
For those on a budget, the Angle 3 combines a light and compact shower speaker with a fun, outdoor portable Bluetooth speaker.

Loudest shower speaker (and best bass): JBL Boombox
What do I like about the JBL Boombox?
- HUGE sound.
- Great battery life.
- Useful carry handle.
What don’t I like about the JBL Boombox?
- The price – it’s steep, but you do get a lot of speaker for your money.
What do you get alongside the JBL Boombox in the box?
- Power adaptor.
- Cable.
- Owner’s manual.
How waterproof is the JBL Boombox?
It’s rated IPX7, so the Boombox is equally suited for use at home in a shower or outside in a downpour.
How well is the JBL Boombox built and designed?
The Boombox only comes in black. It’s built to last and even though at 20.55 x 9.53 x 13.39 inches, it’s going to be even more of a challenge to find a bathroom shelf to fit it than the Charge 4. At 2.4 lbs though, it’s not so heavy you can’t transport it easily for use elsewhere. And it’s rugged enough that you could just pop it on the bathroom floor and shower away.
What does the JBL Boombox sound like?
Epic! It’s LOUD! At 40 watts (60 if connected to the mains) and with four active transducers and two JBL low-end radiators, the bass is just endless. The only downside is you may have to reinforce your shower room to withstand the audio onslaught.
How long does the JBL Boombox battery last?
The Boombox has a massive 20,000mAh rechargeable battery that gives up to a whopping 24 hours of music streaming. Obviously, you’d be pretty wrinkly by then if you were still in the shower, but for weekend trips and all-night raves, it’s a winner. The recharging time of 6.5 hours is only to be expected with such a beast of a battery.
How do I connect the JBL Boombox?
The Boombox has Bluetooth 4.2, you can connect 2 together and, like the Charge 4, it’s compatible with the Connect+ app so you can pair it with any other speaker that is also compatible with the app. It also has a speakerphone and 3.5mm AUX in.
Is the JBL Boombox the best shower speaker for me?
Okay, to be honest, the Boombox is probably overkill for most showers. However, if you are prepared to pay out and want a no-compromise, ear-shredding speaker that can go anywhere, including your shower, look no further.
Buy the JBL Boombox on Amazon.
Best Bluetooth shower speaker (greatest range & easiest to connect): Ultimate Ears Megablast
What do I like about the Ultimate Ears Megablast?
- Impressive connection range.
- Can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Alexa built-in.
What don’t I like about the Ultimate Ears Megablast?
- Need to shout over the music to get Alexa to hear you.
- Easy to knock over.
What do you get alongside the Ultimate Ears Megablast in the box?
- Micro-USB charging cable.
- Power adaptor.
- Removable D-ring.
- Quick start guide.
How waterproof is the Ultimate Ears Megablast?
The Megablast is rated at IP67, so not only seriously waterproof but also impervious to dust, sand, and mud.
How well is the Ultimate Ears Megablast built and designed?
I love the Megablast’s fabric-covered cylindrical shape. It is partially rubberized, so is quite tough, which is handy as it stands upright. It is, however, easy to knock over. However, it has a tripod mount on the base, hidden under a D-ring. It also comes in a range of funky colors:
- Graphite
- Blizzard (White)
- Blue Steel
- Merlot (Red)
- Mojito (Green)
- Lemonade (Yellow)
At 3.50 x 3.50 x 9.40 inches, it’s not ultra-portable and you might need to stand it on the floor in the shower. It’s also quite heavy to carry in a rucksack for any great distance.
What does the Ultimate Ears Megablast sound like?
With two 25mm tweeters, two 55mm active drivers, and two 85mm x 50mm passive radiators, the Megablast’s sound is rich and balanced. It’s also loud. Definitely loud enough to be heard above any shower without distortion. With the Blast app, you can also control the built-in EQ.
How long does the Ultimate Ears Megablast battery last?
12 hours on Bluetooth streaming, 16 on Wi-Fi. You can also buy a ‘power-up’ base that allows you to leave it on so it’s always fully charged.
How do I connect the Ultimate Ears Megablast?
The Megablast can be connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, giving it an impressive 330-foot range on Wi-Fi and 150 feet on Bluetooth. It also has Alexa built-in. You can connect up to 8 Megablasts, which is a great feature for a party, if not a shower.
Is the Ultimate Ears Megablast the best shower speaker for you?
If you’re looking for a shower speaker with Alexa and excellent Wi-Fi and Bluetooth range, the Megablast fits the bill. If you’re looking for something a little cheaper, the Blast is worth considering.
Buy the Ultimate Ears Megablast on Amazon.
Best Wi-fi and Bluetooth shower speaker: Ultimate Ears Blast
What do I like about the Ultimate Ears Blast?
- 360 degree sound.
- Funky color range.
- Wi-fi and Bluetooth.
What don’t I like about the Ultimate Ears Blast?
- Easy to knock over.
- The same problem with the Megablast – need to shout over Alexa if playing music.
What do you get alongside the Ultimate Ears Blast in the box?
- Micro-USB charging cable.
- Power adaptor.
- Removable D-ring.
- Quick start guide.
How waterproof is the Ultimate Ears Blast?
Like the Megablast, the Blast is rated to IP67, so perfect for the shower, or the beach as it’s equally waterproof and sand proof.
How well is the Ultimate Ears Blast built and designed?
Like its cousin, the Megablast, it’s a fabric-covered cylinder with rubberized sections, so it can withstand the occasional drop, so long as it’s not from a height. It stands upright and comes in a range of cool colors:
- Graphite
- Blizzard (White)
- Blue Steel
- Merlot (Red)
- Mojito (Green)
- Lemonade (Yellow)
At 5.60 x 10.10 x 5.50 inches and 2.5 lbs, it should be easy to find a place for it in your bathroom, or rucksack, although it’s not as compact as some shower speakers.
What does the Ultimate Ears Blast sound like?
The Blast has a warm sound with decent bass, but a slightly muffled middle range. It’s impressively loud for the size and price and best of all, doesn’t distort, even at high volumes.
How long does the Ultimate Ears Blast battery last?
The battery life is 12 hours on half-volume, which is pretty reasonable for this type of speaker.
How do I connect the Ultimate Ears Blast?
The Blast has the same impressive range as the Megablast – 330 feet for Wi-Fi and 150 feet for Bluetooth. Unlike the Megabalst, however, it isn’t compatible with the Boom app, so there’s no adjustable EQ for instance. Most importantly, however, it still has full Alexa integration.
Is the Ultimate Ears Blast the best shower speaker for me?
If you’re looking for a shower speaker with Alexa and excellent Wi-Fi and Bluetooth range, the Blast ticks all the boxes. The Megablast does as well, so it’s really a matter of personal preference which you go for.
Buy the Ultimate Ears Blast on Amazon.
Best shower speaker with Alexa: Anker Soundcore Flare
What do I like about the Anker Soundcore Flare?
- Funky light show.
- Compact.
- Inexpensive.
What don’t I like about the Anker Soundcore Flare?
- Given the price, nothing really.

How waterproof is the Anker Soundcore Flare?
Like most of the speakers in this review, it has an IPX7 rating, making it pretty impervious to water in any form.
How well is the Anker Soundcore Flare built and designed?
The Soundcore Flare is about the size of a soda can. It tapers towards the top and is covered in fabric. It comes in two colors, black or blue. At 3.6 x 3.6 x 6 inches and only 1.17 lbs, you can pop it on your bathroom shelf or in your rucksack equally easily.
Its unusual feature is its ambient light show that you can set in 5 modes. It’s a fun addition if you take showers in the dark. Otherwise, it works well as a mood or party light elsewhere.
What does the Anker Soundcore Flare sound like?
With 12 watts and dual drivers arranged back-to-back in combination with passive bass radiators, the Soundcore Flare delivers “intense 360° sound” according to Anker. Well, I wouldn’t call the sound ‘intense’ but it’s certainly well-rounded for a speaker this big. It easily produces enough bass (using Anker’s patented BassUP technology) and volume for shower use. If 12 watts isn’t enough for you, the Anker Flare+ kicks out 25 watts.
How long does the Anker Soundcore Flare battery last?
The Soundcore Flare’s battery life is 12 hours, once again not if you take it to the max though. It’s recharging time is an acceptable 3.5 hours.
How do I connect the Anker Soundcore Flare?
The Soundcore Flare connects via Bluetooth 4.2 or a 3.5mm AUX in. You can pair two together and the Soundcore Flare is compatible with the Soundcore app, which means among other bonuses, you get a customizable EQ.
Is the Anker Soundcore Flare the best shower speaker for me?
If you want a compact, shower speaker that works with Alexa and has a fun light show, then the Soundcore Flare is unbeatable for the money.
Buy the Anker Soundcore Flare on Amazon.

How well is the Fugoo Sport built and designed?
The Sport is solidly built with a funky, rectangular design. It comes in black or black with a blue surround. At only 4.00 x 7.00 x 9.00 inches and 1 lb, it’s easy to grab off the shower shelf and take it with you wherever you go.
What does the Fugoo Sport sound like?
For such a small Bluetooth speaker, the Sport is seriously loud. At 105db (its maximum volume) you’ll be able to hear it even if you’re taking a shower in a waterfall. The two 40mm drivers in the front and 100x28mm passive radiator in the rear, produce wonderfully clear and crisp stereo sound.
How long does the Fugoo Sport battery last?

Most waterproof shower speaker: LEZII
What do I like about the LEZII?
- Super waterproof.
- Compact.
- Inexpensive.
What don’t I like about the LEZII?
- Small speaker.
- Distorts at higher volumes.
What do you get alongside the LEZII in the box?
- Cable.
- Manual.
- Lanyard.
How waterproof is the LEZII?
As waterproof as it gets if you ignore the IPX9 rating which is really designed for vehicles. Not only is the LEZII waterproof to IPX8, it also floats so you can use it in the bath as well as the shower.
How well is the LEZII built and designed?
The LEZII is a palm-sized square with a tough metal mesh giving it a really solid feel. It comes in black with a black, orange, or blue surround. The Orange and blue models cost around $1 more and have FM radio. At 3.5 x 3.5 x 1.8 inches and only 9.6oz, the LEZII is equally at home with its supplied lanyard hanging from your shower or rucksack.
What does the LEZII sound like?
Naturally a Bluetooth speaker this small and inexpensive isn’t going to have a huge sound. The LEZII produces 10 watts and the sound quality is surprisingly good with some bass kick. It tends to distort if you push it too hard, but most speakers of this size and price do. Despite this, it’s still loud enough for shower use.
How long does the LEZII battery last?
The LEZII battery life is a reasonable 8-12 hours, depending on volume, with a 3.5 hour recharging time. There’s no mains option.
How do I connect the LEZII?
The LEZII uses Bluetooth 5.0 and unusually, has a TF/SD slot and an FM radio (if you pay a little more as mentioned). It also has a built-in microphone, a 3.5mm AUX in and you can pair two together. That’s a lot of functionality for such a small speaker and price.
Is the LEZII the best shower speaker for me?
If you’re looking for a seriously waterproof shower speaker at a budget price that you can also use out and about, and you don’t need mega sound quality or volume, then the LEZII is a great choice.

How waterproof is the Altec Lansing IMW778 Omnijacket Ultra?
The Omnijacket Ultra has an IPX67 rating, so is pretty well everything proof, although it’s worth pointing out that the IP ratings don’t include ingress of beer or soda if you’re in the habit of drinking while showering. Mind you, like the LEZII, it also floats, so it’s perfect for pool parties.
How well is the Altec Lansing IMW778 Omnijacket Ultra built and designed?
The Omnijacket Ultra is made from tough plastic with a rubber surround that makes it able to withstand the occasional knock or drop. It’s covered in blue or red fabric, giving it a funky feel. At 10.50 x 7.70 x 4.80 inches it’s not the most compact shower speaker you can buy, nor the lightest at 5.49lbs.
What does the Altec Lansing IMW778 Omnijacket Ultra sound like?
With dual 1.2 inch tweeters, dual 2 neodymium woofers, and a passive radiator the sound is warm with a noticeable, but not overpowering bass. The mids and highs are nicely balanced too.
How long does the Altec Lansing IMW778 Omnijacket Ultra battery last?
Naturally, despite all its other good points, the most compelling reason to buy an Omnijacket Ultra is that incredible 60 hours of playback. Even if that’s only at half-volume, it doesn’t matter. The Omnijacket Ultra is loud enough to be heard in the shower even at lower volumes. And recharging is only around 4 hours.
How do I connect the Altec Lansing IMW778 Omnijacket Ultra?
The Omnijacket Ultra is compatible with most Bluetooth devices and it is equipped with NFC to make pairing even easier. Alternatively, you could use its 3.5mm AUX in. It also has an in-built microphone and you can also pair two together.
Is the Altec Lansing IMW778 Omnijacket the best shower speaker for me?
There are definitely more compact and lighter shower speakers for the money, but none with such amazing battery life and well-balanced sound.

How well is the AVWOO IP67 built and designed?
It’s compact, circular design fits easily in the hand and the hook is a nice touch, even though there is no supplied lanyard which seems an omission. It’s surprisingly sturdy and at a mere 4.00 x 4.00 x 1.60 inches and 10.4 ounces, small and light enough to hang in the shower or on a rucksack or even jacket.
The 7 color-changing lights are a fun addition. You can set them in 3 different modes for some ambient shower lighting.
What does the AVWOO IP67 sound like?
Surprisingly good given the price and size. Even though it only pumps out 5 watts, it’s still loud enough to hear under an average shower and even at higher volumes, there’s little distortion.
How long does the AVWOO IP67 battery last?
The 1000mAh rechargeable battery lasts up to 12 hours, which is fine for most uses.
How do I connect the AVWOO IP67?
The AVWOO uses Bluetooth 4.2 and has a range of around 50 feet. It also has a built-in microphone as mentioned, which really isn’t good enough to use in the shower. It charges via USB and if you don’t want to use Bluetooth, it has a memory card slot.
Is the AVWOO IP67 the best shower speaker for me?
If you don’t want to make calls in the shower and are just looking for a cheap, compact Bluetooth speaker then check out the AVWOO IP67. The color-changing lights are a fun addition.
